RALEIGH, N.C.—It’s been practically a year since the RFA Church has moved into its new, larger location right off of I-440.

For a congregation of 1,500 to 2,000, the move did have its share of initial bumps along the road, most notably where the church needed to hold their services at a high school for six months, and even having to scramble for another temporary spot for an additional few weeks prior to the new location opening during the second week of June last year.

“We met in a tent in the church parking lot, with 1,000 to 1,500 for three weeks (during services in May) and June in Raleigh, North Carolina,” said Worship Pastor RFA Church Charlie Perkins. “By God’s grace we made it happen. We even grew during that time. We thought we would not have any people left.”

Once the church received its certificate of occupancy and the new space opened, though, Perkins said, “They loved it. They were ecstatic. I think our congregation really bought in, where we were headed philosophically.”

As Perkins explained, the previous home for the church had been built in the 1990s, and “was built for a different style of ministry,” around a full orchestra and choir performing. But with a “major reboot to our ministry about six years ago,” the new location targets “what we want to do now, with the technology and lighting.”

Since the install of the AVL equipment at RFA Church nearly a year ago, the church hasn’t “had to do a thing to it.”

What had been an abandoned and gutted 58,000-square foot facility, hit by a tornado five years ago, when it came to deciding on which company would handle the audio, video and lighting install work last year, Perkins was open about Custom Sound Designs, based in Fort Wayne, Ind., not being his original choice.

“I had really in my mind to use another company,” said Perkins. “But we had gotten a contact (with CSD) from our contractor, as they had worked with them on other projects. I reluctantly initially met with Doug Hood, and the thing that probably sold me to change my mind, is that he is a worship leader himself, and I think he kind of got of the day in and day out functioning of a church. He’s not just an AV installer or an AV owner, he leads worship. Within about a week, we went ahead with our decision to use CSD.”
